Film: Some of my Favorite Dudes!

I went back home a few weeks ago, only to see a few of my favorite people!

Who doesn't love an impromptu portrait session in the rain? World, meet my friend Erin. I actually didn't really have a conversation with this kid until this night. We never really spoke in high school, so while drinking beer at the county fair, I was like....WHY are we not friends? Erin is good shit. I mean, he is one of those guys that is hilarious, fun and full of life! And ladies, in real life, he totally looks like Ryan Reynolds! Uh huh, you know what I'm talking about!

Then below we have the Bielefeldt brothers. These two have been my best friends for years and years and I just love them to bits! They have always been there for me, support me in everything I do and are huge fans, but keep it real for me, for sure.

You may recognize Shawn from his previous shoot with me, yeah, he's kind of a big deal!

Film: Grandma!

A few weeks ago, an incredibly awesome person lent me a film camera, that is absolutely amazing by the way, and I totally became re-inspired to photograph some things on 'my list'. I also inspired some spontaneous shoots too! Film photos fire me up because of their authenticity. It is SO real and lovely and it constantly reminds me of why I am a photographer.

The imperfection is what makes it beautiful to me.

I've been meaning to photograph my 90 year old grandmother for a long time. 90 years old. What does that look like? 90 years old. What do you do? 90 years old. What makes you happy?

I can say that at 90 years old, Grandma, as she is known to everyone, is quite the woman. Her favorite past time is entertaining, chatting and playing board games. Taking her photograph was so much fun, because it was definitely the highlight of her day, but it was more than that. It was an opportunity to really document an amazing woman.

Film: Pinhole Camera!

Before my last trip to Vancouver, the shutter on my film camera went out; therefore, I had all of this film to shoot and no camera to shoot it with! My good friends Ral and Danelle of RAD Studios took me to their local camera shop, Beau Photo, where they had a slew of film cameras to purchase! I was originally going to get a Holga camera, but I own 3 of them already...and then I saw it...Holga's newest in their line of simple cameras - the panoramic pinhole camera.

This camera is as basic as it gets. No viewfinder, no shutter (really), and no telling how you have exposed correctly or if anything at all is in focus. I. was. in. heaven. Just the anticipation to see how things would turn out was too good to pass up, so I purchased the camera and on I went!

My good friend Bill, with Richard Photo Lab, gave me a call one night asking "Eliesa, what in the HECK did you do with this film?" Here are a few of the results...

Personal Style!

Let's talk for a minute about personal style.

Every photographer I know goes through a creative rut. Recently, I have received many e-mails asking me how I developed my personal style (both in weddings and the commercial world.)?? The next question is always "How do you keep the creativity flowing?"

To answer these questions, I decided to not use myself as an example, but rather 2 of the people on Team Photogen Inc - Liz and Brandon!

Both Liz and Brandon are months away from graduating from art school. Whether you are working as a full time photographer, trying to get to 'full-time-status' or are a student, shooting can often times become redundant. Every shoot suddenly becomes 'work' and each assignment is daunting...what am I going to do NOW?!?!? If you have ever felt this way - the good news is that we have ALL felt that way! You are not alone! Yes, photography is your passion, but there is a fine line between loving what you do and loving it SO much that you are going to burn yourself out too quickly.

So, what do we do to fix this?

Keep shooting. Keep Shooting! Keep SHOOTING!!!

Shoot for yourself and shoot what you WANT to shoot! It is SO important to find time to shoot personal projects and experiment with new (or old!) technology! Maybe you have always wanted to shoot film - I DARE you to go pick up a roll and shoot it! Maybe you have always wanted to shoot with studio lights - I DARE you to rent a space for a day! Maybe you have always wanted to shoot some models for a fashion shoot - I DARE you to organize it!

My point is that to answer both of the questions above, you need to commit to exploring other avenues in photography, not just the gigs you are getting paid for. Push your limits, make mistakes and challenge yourself - THIS is what is going to help you develop your personal style AND keep your creativity fresh and fabulous!

Back to Brandon and Liz! These two have a special and very distinctive style of their own!

Liz is the QUEEN of film! The three images below were all shot with film and I am constantly inspired by her work! She has a way with her camera too, that few people have!

Brandon recently found, what I think, is an incredible niche! He does an AMAZING job at conceptualizing shoots and his photoshop skillz are CRAZY good!
(And yes, that IS Cadence below - doing a fabulous job at modeling!)

Both of their style's didn't just happen, they practiced and worked towards something that is going to be AMAZING!

I hope this inspires you!

Abbie: An Impromtu Portrait!

World - meet Abbie! She is my SUPER cool, bad-ass-hair-color-tech-friend from Vancouver! Well, actually, she's an Aussie, but now chills out on the west coast of Canada!

I met Abbie a couple years ago through Brock and she has been a fabulous friend! While I was in Vancouver this past month, we did a bit of an impromptu photo session - I LOVE the way these turned out!

Guest Assistant: B-ROCK!

While in Vancouver, I asked Brock if he would be a guest assistant for me at the amazing Belsey Wedding! I met Brock, officially, through some friends of friends, but it wasn't until after shooting his brother's wedding that we truly became photo-nerd-friends!

Brock has been a great friend to us here at Photogen Inc and we want to wish him the best on his new adventure! 2 days after shooting this wedding, Brock boarded a plane to Australia to follow his long-time-love who is attending med school in Aussie! Yes, it is a big, bold move, but I am SO happy that they are embarking on this amazing journey!

B-ROCK you ROCK! Thanks for being a RAD assistant!
